Default PvP/PvE Split Seemingly Here to Stay (Massivley Interview)

It looks like they intend to stay the route on splitting PvE and PvP skills so that one does not get nerfed or buffed at the expense of the other.

For those that don't read the linked article - the article itself is ArenaNet's stance regarding GW2, but reasonably applies to the future of GW1 skill updates (and content updates with new skills, if any) as well - which is what this thread intended to discuss.

If you wish to discuss the ramifications of GW2 starting out in this manner, please discuss it on gw2guru, as this thread is just to discuss the ramifications of the skill split mentality of ArenaNet (good or bad) with regards to the original Guild Wars (an assumption).

Good for PvP, bad for the state of PvE.

I miss the times when we had to change our builds or improve them based on PvP changes.

Fair enough, but I'd rather say it's good for some people and bad for others. Not everyone misses those times.

Not necessarily bad...they nerf things in PvE for PvE's sake too. I'm sure that will continue happening in GW 2.

From my friends who are now playing LotR, the split was a good thing that came to late. The split means that PvE'er can't blame skill updates on pvp'ers. They are countless imba skills that were changed with only explanations from pvp, even if they were clearly imba in pve as well.

Like what, once every two years?

This will only work if they actually give a damn about PvE balance this time around.

This is only a good thing if they will take an equal care to properely balance both formats. As opposed to using as an excuse to introduce tons of absurd imba to PvE.

In the earlier years, they said that they were nerfing skills for PvP reasons, but really we all knew that the skills were broken (or, at least, very powerful) in PvE as well. Just because they didn't say it outright doesn't make it less true.

Furthermore, you can't really compare the rate of balance updates now to what they'll be like when GW2 is released. We got updates every month (sometimes every week...) early on because the entire company was working on this game.

I for one welcome this change. We've gotten a ton of good changes to PvP and PvE skills since they split them. My only problem with the split was that if they did it for all of the skills, it would be too much to re-memorize, but if there are fewer skills and the skills are split to begin with, it shouldn't be a problem.

Sounds counter productive since they sounded like they were going to make pve and pvp less black and white in GW2...

Yeah, I put it on both sites. I thought it was relevant to GW1 as well (and figured people would notice the GW2 references reading the article). It pretty much means (for GW1) there's no chance they will reverse their decision to split the skills, and that there will probably be more skill splits in the future for GW1.

For the relevance to GW2, as being discussed on gw2guru, it means it will be that way from the get-go.

It definitely gives insight about how ArenaNet will continue on into the future in both games.

QFT.

If implemented well having a symbiotic relationship between the two formats is a win/win for quality, skill, longevity, etc, etc.

In saying in the long term I see PvP and PvE MMORPG splitting into two totally separate genres and markets.

The split here over the years is point and proof.
